An internship is single semester, one-time, paid or unpaid work term which offers students an experience related to their field of study or career objective. The Students normally work during the Summer semester, but some Internships are offered during the Fall or Spring semesters. Students may or may not obtain credit for the internship. However, in either case, the internship should be a carefully monitored learning experience in which the individual reflects actively on what s/he is learning throughout the experience.
Employer Provides:
- Job description, qualifications, and company literature
- Interviews on campus, at the work site, or by telephone
- Supervision, orientation to company, a Mentor, and on-going training
- Assignments appropriate to the student's educational level, job related to major field of study
- Compensation (paid or non-paid, benefits), Worker's Compensation Insurance for interns
- Evaluation of student's performance throughout the internship
Career Center Provides:
- An on-line job posting service for your internship opportunities
- Resume Referral service
- Interview facilities for on-campus interviewing
- Professional staff to assist you
Academic Department Provides:
- Some, not all, Academic Departments provide academic credit for students electing to participate in an internship.
- If you would like to align your internship with course goals and objectives, the Career Center will assist you in contacting the respective departments.
Students Provide:
- State-of-the-art information, technology, and skills
- Information about whether they will be receiving academic credit for the internship to the Employer
- Learning goals and objectives that support academic and career interest
- Their own housing, unless the employer offers accommodations
- Compliance with company policies as outlined for the student
