Apply for an Internship
- Develop a system to track your search.
- Contact each company on your revised list.
- Send a cover letter and resume. Have multiple people critique your resume and cover letter. Walk-in advising is provided by the Career Center.
- Follow up by letter or e-mail about a week later.
- Interview for the internship.
- Develop your interviewing skills by attending a workshop or by participating in mock interviews.
- Recognize that some interviews will be conducted by phone.
- Ask questions in the interview, such as:
- What will my responsibilities be?
- Will there be any chance to participate in a special project?
- How does the department where I would work fit into the company's structure?
- Explain why you want the internship and emphasize what you can contribute to the company.
- Be enthusiastic and interested.
- Be able to express how this internship fits into your academic path and career goals.
- Write thank you letters to the employers with whom you interviewed, even if you are not chosen for the position.
- Write letters of acceptance and refusal.
