How to Begin Finding an Internship
- Talk with your academic advisor about when an internship would fit into your academic schedule.
- Decide on some parameters for your search.
- Determine what you want to gain from your internship. In other words, establish some objectives.
- Understand the importance of resume writing, letter writing, and interviewing skills. Both seminars and online resources can help you with this.
- Take advantage of Career Fairs and the AggieLaunch job postings to begin targeting several organizations. Start with 10 to 20.
- If you are unsure of the particular companies you wish to target, the Career Center Library and the West Campus Library have many good resources that detail companies in certain industries. Feel free to ask the Librarian for assistance.
- Research the organizations
- Look at the company web site to determine if the organization has an internship program.
- You also may have to write or phone the company to obtain information about the internship program the company offers (or to find out if the company would interested in an intern even if they do not publicize an established program.)
- Make sure your letter is addressed to the manager of the department in which you wish to work or to the contact specified in the internship literature.
- Narrow down the firms to which you will apply according to how their programs coincide with your goals and objectives.
- Your list of potential companies should now include around 10 companies.
