Make the Most of Your Internship

  • Be Responsible.
  • Talk with your supervisor about expectations--both yours and the supervisor's.
  • Understand that the orientation/training may be formal or on-the-job.
  • Meet your deadlines.
  • Learn the rules and regulations of the company.
  • Be prompt and well groomed.
  • Complete assignments.
  • Let people know your schedule.
  • Ask questions and record the answers.
  • Be aware of office norms. How do people dress and behave? Adhere to these norms.
  • Volunteer for projects.
  • Ask for feedback from your supervisor.
  • Build rapport with co-workers and support staff.
  • Show that you are enthusiastic and responsible.
  • Continue to evaluate your experience using the goals/objectives you and your supervisor set for the internship.
  • Find a mentor. This person can help you through rough times and give you advice and insight about the industry.
  • Be flexible about the assignments you are given. Understand that there may be some menial tasks along with more fulfilling responsibilities.
  • Observe and listen. Try to talk with as many people as possible while completing your internship. Be careful to respect the time constraints of these people.
  • Keep a journal. This will help you with any academic assignments you may have and will give you feedback as to whether or not you are accomplishing your goals and objectives.

Concluding The Experience

  • Leave your projects in order, so that someone can understand how to continue or finish those tasks.
  • Write thank-you letters to your supervisor, mentor and co-workers.
  • Get feedback from your supervisor, preferably through a formal evaluation process.
  • Ask for letters of reference.
  • Complete any academic assignments/projects required by your department.
  • Maintain the contacts you make.
