DESCRIPTION OF TEXAS A&M PROGRAM
Horticulture encompasses the art, science and technology of production, utilization and distribution of fruits, vegetables and nursery/floral crops throughout all facets of our society. Graduates have the technical and scientific skills as well as the communication, leadership and interpersonal capabilities necessary to function effectively as horticultural professionals.

CAREER FOCUSED SPECIALTIES
Production & Management:
This emphasis is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for a career in the production and management of horticultural crops. Graduates in the option are prepared for specific careers in production, design, management, sales and processing of horticultural products.
Science & Biotechnology:
This emphasis provides a stronger foundation in basic sciences and is intended for those who plan to pursue a graduate degree.
Environmental & Urban Horticulture:
This emphasis is designed for students interested in learning how plants improve the environment and the quality of our lives. Students in this option prepare for managerial careers with public, youth, not-for-profit agencies and commercial horticulture programs.
TYPICAL JOB TITLES
The horticultural science major may lead to management positions with garden centers, retail florists, roadside markets, landscape firms, and golf courses. Graduates may find jobs as sales representatives with horticultural equipment firms, plant suppliers, and chemical supply companies. The degree can be preparation for working in arboretums and public gardens and for careers as a park naturalist, a city forester, or a plant inspector. Graduates with an interest in technology may want to work with tissue cultures or genetic engineering. With advanced degrees, students may work as researchers, extension agents, or college teachers.
