Cover Letter Writing

A cover letter serves as an introduction, enticing prospective employers to turn the page and review a candidate's resume.

A cover letter also:

  • Is addressed to the most important employer contact, the hiring manager, and should indicate which position the candidate is pursuing and how he/she learned of the employment opportunity. By-name referrals are included here.
  • Allows the candidate to answer the question of "Why should I hire you?" because it summarizes those skills and experiences that are closely related to the position requirements.
  • Should outline the individual's action plan, including what steps will be taken next.
  • Should be a word-processed original unless e-mail correspondence has been requested.
