Resume Tutorial - Demographics

Demographics | Objective | Education | Skills | Experience | References | Appearance | Final Thoughts

Include name, both current and permanent addresses, phone number, and e-mail address.

Current and Permanent Addresses
If you are at a different address during holidays, summers or are moving immediately after graduation, be sure you include a permanent address. This can be your parents or it can be an address where someone will always know how to reach you and can be trusted to contact you immediately if a recruiter calls or mails something.

Cell Phone
If you include your cell phone number, please note that you must use good judgment when answering your phone. Recruiters complain that candidates often answer their cell phones in locations that do not allow them to communicate well.
  • Allow the call to roll over to voice mail if you do not recognize the number AND are in a location that is noisy, has bad reception or otherwise interferes with your ability to speak professionally.
  • Return the call when you get to a location that is quiet and allows for a good conversation.

Voice Mail
As you begin the job search process, it is likely that you will begin to receive phone calls from those recruiters interested in interviewing you. Keep in mind that your voice mail message will be an important part of that first impression.
  • Your voice mail and answering machine messages should be concise.
  • Use a very simple message such as You have reached 123-4567. We are unable to take your call. Please leave a detailed message and we will return the call as soon as possible. Phone messages that are lengthy, include music, poetry, statements that you are at a bar, etc, should be removed once you begin your job search.
  • Stress to roommates that you must receive all your messages. Recruiters often will not call you twice, regardless of whether or not you got their messages.

Email Address
Be sure to use an email address that will make a good impression. Those that convey a message that is silly or unprofessional, call your intelligence into question, or have any type of obscene or vulgar meaning should be avoided. We encourage students to create an email account for their job search that includes some variation of their first and last name, if possible.
