The first step of writing a resume is to have the right format.

Your name will always be located at the top of your resume. As the most important piece of information, your name should have the largest font (between 14 and 16 point font size) and be bolded. All other information on your resume should be between 10.5 to 12-point font. Include your contact information—meaning your city, state, phone number, email address, and LinkedIn URL if you have one. Be sure to use a professional email address and have a professional voicemail set up on your phone.

Here is an example of how contact information can be formatted in a resume:

Note: Very rarely does an employer require your full mailing address on a resume!

Maintain the same font throughout the resume for a professional appearance. Times New Roman, Optima, Helvetica, Courier, and Arial are some easily read fonts commonly used in resumes. Section titles are usually bolded, as well as institution names, company names, publisher names, and conference names. Positions are generally italicized for emphasis.
