Differences Between a Resume & CV
When applying to positions, you want to decide whether to submit a resume or a curriculum vitae (CV). Generally, a resume should be submitted for industry, non-profit, and public sector positions. A CV is used for academic or research-intensive positions.
Resume | CV |
---|---|
Masters = 1-2 pages Doctorate = 1-3 pages | As long as needed to convey relevant information or 1 page CV if requested |
Concise overview of information relevant to position to which you’re applying; may use “Selected” for categories, such as Publications, and show most relevant or recent experiences. Resume is a snapshot of your skills and experiences not a comprehensive list. | Comprehensive listing of academic and professional work experiences |
Usually does not include names of advisors, primary investigators, or committee chairs | Often includes names of advisors or primary investigators and emphasizes your institutional or laboratory affiliations |
Emphasis placed on skills and impact in individual roles | Emphasis placed on academic scholarship, teaching, and service |
If position is calling for specifically educational requirements (e.g., master’s or doctorate), place education further toward top; if you have strong relevant experience or specific educational requirements are less important for specific role, may place lower on document | Education section always near top of document |
References kept on separate document; R&D resumes may include references on resume | References can be included at end of document |
