The beginning of the semester can be a hectic time for many students looking for internships or full-time positions. Obtaining a position takes time and effort, but there may be some details that students often overlook when preparing for career fairs and interviews. We have asked for feedback from recruiters on how students can improve, and we received one letter from a former student on how recruiters view her fellow aggies. Here is what she said:
Hi there-
I was on campus last week interviewing full-time and intern candidates for our organization.
You guys always do a great job – you are very hospitable, the facilities are great (it was nice to actually be in the Career Center this year instead of Kyle Field!), and the HireAggies site is pretty easy to use.
We found some good candidates, but a few things that I noticed that I'd like to pass along are:
* Everyone looked great on paper, but didn't necessarily deliver in person. We didn't have any bad interviews, but I felt like the candidates could have been more prepared for our visit. It's important to know about the company you're interviewing with, but it's also important to have an understanding of the industry.
* No one asked us meaningful or thought provoking questions. I use this to gage if people have really done their homework and are inquisitive enough to find out more than just what a typical day is. I felt like pretty much everyone fell short on this.
* Two girls were wearing bright blue nail polish. It baffled all of us as to why someone would come to a professional interview with bright blue nail polish on. It's hard to get past it and to take that person seriously. I know that people will be their own person, but if you can remind the students that recruiters do look at that, even if we work in advertising, that would be great.
We always enjoy working with A&M. Thanks for all you do to make it a good experience.
