Theoretical mathematicians develop new mathematical principles and examine the relationships between existing principles of mathematics. The mathematics major at Texas A&M University is available in both the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree plan and Bachelor of Science (BS) degree plan. The BA option is intended for students who are interested in a traditional liberal arts education in mathematics, and a minor field of student must be chosen for this degree option. The BS option provides the student with an in-depth study of both science (physics, chemistry, biology) and mathematics. With carefully chosen electives in education, either of the above degree plans can lead to teacher certification.
